Abstract

445,352. Treating sewage &c. KESSENER, H. J. N. H., 1, J. P. Coen Straat, The Hague. Oct. 6, 1934, No. 28669. [Class 111] An aerator for use in the treatment of sewage &c. comprises a rotary shaft c from which project a number of strips b which are sufficiently resilient to become bent while being drawn through liquid and to resume their unrestrained form on leaving the liquid. The strips are so arranged on the shaft that when the aerator is immersed to less than half its diameter in liquid, the acute angle made by each strip to the horizontal as the strip enters the liquid is less than the angle between the horizontal and a line passing through the centre of the shaft and the outer end.of the strip. The aerator is mounted in a tank, and to prevent air that has been beaten into the liquid from escaping too rapidly a plate e is fixed horizontally near the aerator and below the surface of the liquid as shown in Fig. 2. An air diffuser f may be provided as shown in Fig. 4, and also a baffle g to assist circulation of the liquid. Fig. 5 shows an, installation for the aeration of sewage &c. in' which a constant flow of the liquid under treatment is maintained. The liquid is admitted through a pipe hand inlet i into tanks j, k provided with aerators as described above. The tank k discharges into a settling tank l provided with an effluent chamber m and a sludge return conduit n from which sludge can be lifted by a screw or wheel &c. o and returned into the inlet pipe h. The sludge lifter o and the aerators in the tanks may be driven by a motor p.
