Abstract

Fabrics are rendered crease-resisting by treatment with a natural resin or wax-like substance, and an aldehyde, and dried at a temperature of at least 130 DEG C. A strong organic acid may also p be present during the treatment with the aldehyde. The fabric may be treated first with the natural resin or wax-like substance and thereafter with an aldehyde and strong organic acid, or the aldehyde may be used first, or all the reagents may be employed simultaneously. A suitable natural resin is colophony, suitable wax-like substances are spermaceti, hardened sperm oil, carnauba wax, candelilla wax, montan wax, paraffin wax, ceresin and the like; suitable aldehydes are formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, furfural and addition products such as aldehyde-ammonia and aldehyde-bisulphite; suitable strong organic acids are acetic and formic acids. In examples: (1) a viscose fabric is impregnated with a 1 in 20 solution of colophony in tetrahydro - furfuralcohol, squeezed, immersed in a 5 per cent formaldehyde solution containing \ba1/2\be per cent glacial acetic acid, squeezed and dried for 20 mins at 150 DEG C. (2) A viscose fabric is impregnated with a 1 in 20 solution of spermaceti in benzene, squeezed, treated with a 4 per cent formaldehyde solution containing ,6 per cent of 85 per cent formic acid, squeezed and dried for 15 mins at 150 DEG C. (3) A mixed cotton and linen fabric is impregnated with a 1 in 20 solution of paraffin wax (M.P. 63 DEG C.) in trichlorethylene, squeezed, immersed in a 5 per cent aqueous formaldehyde solution containing \ba1/2\be per cent of glacial acetic acid, squeezed and dried for 20 mins at 150 DEG C.
