Abstract
445,045. Drying apparatus. SHORT, A. A., 2, Aylesbury Road, Thame, Oxfordshire, and DUNLEAVIE, C. E., 2, Bunkers Hill, Oxford. Oct. 10, 1934, No. 29053. [Class 34 (ii)] [See also Group XII] Heat-exchanging elements for use in kilns, coolers, driers or other apparatus for promoting heat exchange between different, materials, such as a semi-liquid and a gas, comprise members of tubular form each having a protuberant portion or portions so shaped and disposed with respect to adjacent parts of the element that when the elements are jumbled in use the protuberant portions will constitute scrapers and exert a scraping and cleaning action on other elements in the apparatus. The elements are intended more particularly for use in the drying of cement slurry and serve to keep the slurry permeable to the hot drying gases. Many different forms of element are shown and described. Fig. 1 shows an element of approximately double bell shape with a protuberant flange 10 at each end and with side apertures 31. In addition each flange may have one or three protuberant lugs, the lugs at the two ends being relatively staggered. The element shown in Fig. 3 comprises two bottomless dish-shaped end parts 11 joined by two outwardly concave bridge parts 13, the outer margins 12 of the parts 11 forming the protuberant scraping portions. In other modifications the element is in the form of a perforated or unperforated cylindrical tube 18 with an undulatory flange at each end forming projecting teeth 20, Fig. 13, or of a tubular member flared at each end and of circular or approximately polygonal section with concave sides 28, Fig. 20. Fig. 14 shows an element which at one end 21 is of circular section and at the other end 22 is of elliptical section. Fig. 21 shows a cylindrical member cut away at its ends to form protuberant teeth 17 and which may also have a row of radially disposed lugs 27. If the lugs 27 are omitted the ends of the member may be outwardly flared.
