Abstract
<PICT:0444898/III/1> <PICT:0444898/III/2> In apparatus for effecting exothermic catalytic gas reactions the catalyst is arranged in a plurality of layers AB, CD, in a bundle of tubular reaction chambers around which the gases flow before entering the tubes, and a supplementary current 5 of cool fresh gas is directed against the exterior of the tubes so as to cool the contents thereof at a point preceding that at which overheating would occur. The tubes are preferably free from catalyst at this point. A further layer G of catalyst may be placed at the exit of the tubes. In a modification the upper catalyst layer CD may be arranged between the tubes instead of within them. An alternative device for supplying the supplementary cooling gas comprises perforated annular tubes surrounding the catalyst tubes at a portion of restricted diameter as shown in Fig. 5. The supply tube to the annulus is parallel to the catalyst tube and situated in a recess therein.
