[Classes 9 (i) and 9 (ii)] [See also Group XII] A power-generating unit for producing high pressure gases suitable for starting internalcombustion engines as described in Specification 355,022, [Group XXVII], and for other purposes comprises a mixture of nitro-glycerine containing pellets and nitro-cellulose pellets and means for igniting the pellets to produce combustion without detonation. As shown in Fig. 3, the power generating unit comprises a cartridge having a combustible case 5 and closure cap 25 and a metal ferrule 6 having a central aperture 7 to receive a contact pin 8 included in an electric circuit which also includes a contact strip 14 and a bridge wire embedded in match head composition 16 and earthed to the ferrule at 18. Discs 9, 10 of insulating material are arranged at the base of the cartridge and a sleeve 12 of insulating material is provided in the aperture 7. The pellets may be of different sizes, those nearest the igniting means being smaller. The match head composition 16 may be ignited by a resistance wire or by a spark gap. Fig. 5 shows a modification in which the pellet 28 of match head composition is anchored in a base washer 10b and ignited by a primer cap 7b to ignite the main charge. Fig. 11 shows the main charge enclosed in a small bag of silk, rayon or nitro-cellulose film composition which may burn without ash. The charge is ignited by a match head 66 carried by electric leads 67. Other modifications are described.
