Abstract
Aqueous emulsions of natural or artificial bitumen, asphalt, petroleum pitch, resins, or waxes made with clay as an emulsifying-agent comprise a major proportion of one or more of the above materials having a relatively high melting or softening point and a minor proportion of one or more of the above materials of relatively low melting or softening point, the components being emulsified as separate constituents, and not fused together. The lower melting or softening material is preferably solid or semi-solid, but adhesive, at the temperature of use, preferably melting or softening about 10 DEG C. above such temperature, and acting as a matrix to cement together the harder particles. The emulsion may also contain dispersed unmeltable materials such as filling or fibrous materials or colouring matters such as iron oxide red, or chromium oxide green. The final emulsion may be p prepared by mixing separate emulsions of the constituents, or one constituent may be emulsified and a further constituent emulsified in the emulsion so produced. According to examples: (1) emulsions containing 50 per cent of water were prepared with the aid of clay from petroleum asphalts having softening points according to K.S. of 30 DEG C., 40 DEG C., and 90 DEG C., and from natural asphalt having a softening point of 130 DEG C. The final emulsion was prepared by mixing 20 parts: 10 parts: 30 parts: and 40 parts of the above emulsions respectively. (2) 72 parts of an emulsion consisting of 45 parts of coal tar pitch with a softening point of 90 DEG C. according to K.S., 5 parts of clay and 50 pts. of water are added to 28 pts. of red iron oxide. To 3 pts. of this mixture is added 1 pt. of an emulsion containing 55 pts. petroleum asphalt having a softening point of 35 DEG C., 5 pts. clay and 40 pts. water. The pasty emulsion produces a coherent film which is not too soft in strong sunlight. (3) An emulsion is prepared from 50 pts. Gilsonite-asphalt (softening point 120 DEG C.) 5 pts. clay and 45 pts. water. 45 pts. of soft cumaron resin (softening point 30 DEG C.) are emulsified with 6 pts. clay and 49 pts. of water. 80 pts. of the first emulsion were stirred with 20 pts. of the latter emulsion. The products may be used as paints, protective coatings, cements, &c. Specifications 316,780, [Class 81 (i)], and 362,577, are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 is not restricted to clay as the emulsifying-agent, but also describes the use of alkalis, fats, fatty oils, fatty acids, resins and their saponification products, sulphite waste liquor, starch-flour, and gelatinous materials. Examples describing emulsions made with the aid of soap and turkey red oil are included. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
