Abstract
442,382. Jointing tubes to plates. ROBERTSON, J. H., 1, Albemarle Street, Piccadilly, London. Sept. 27, 1934, No. 27721. [Class 99 (i)] In the jointing of a tube c to a tube plate b by expansion of an inner sleeve or liner f provided with an external locating flange g, the bole a in the tube plate is formed with a recess or pocket c for the reception of a ring d which is adapted to bear against the outer wall of the recess and the exterior of the tube and is made of a metal harder than either the said liner f, tube c or plate b. The liner extends into the tube beyond the inner end of the ring d, and preferably the ring is provided with convex inner and outer faces. The construction is such that, upon introduction into the liner of a tapered expanding mandril h, the flange g will be forced against the tube plate and the tube will become slightly flared within the hole a, distorting the wall of the latter; at the same time the ring d will partly embed itself in the outer wall of the recess e, and its inner face will indent itself in the tube and cause the wall of the latter to bulge inwardly to produce a corresponding indentation in the liner. More than one ring d may be employed, and the recess e may be formed with an undercut outer wall. Fig. 5 shows a construction in which the tube c has a flared end c<2> to coact with a coned seating r in the tube plate band the underface p<1> of the flange p of the liner f is conical.
