Abstract

441,844. Chucks. STONER, A. M., 297, Mountain Road, West Hartford, Connecticut, U.S.A. April 27, 1934, No. 12749. [Class 83 (iii)] In a bevel-closing chuck a carrier 14, Fig. 1, for the jaws 18 is located in a recess 13 in the body 10 and is provided with radial slots 16 for the jaw-opening springs 17 which are screwed into tapped recesses in the jaws and are secured to the carrier by bent ends 20 so as to constrain the jaws to move radially outwards. The jaws are closed by a bevelled cap 21 screwing on the exterior of the body 10 and provided with gear teeth 25 engaged by a removable bevel-gear wrench 24. A pilot pin 27 on the wrench is inserted in an aperture in one of two blocks 23, slidably keyed to the body at 22 and constrained to move axially with the cap by means of tongues 26 thereon engaging an inturned flange on the cap. In a modified construction the spiral springs are replaced by U-shaped springs 34, Fig. 4, inserted in the carrier 37 and jaws 38, and the apertures 28 for the wrench pilot are provided in the cap 21. The wrench meshes with teeth 28<1> formed on a ring 29 splined to the body 10 by keys 30 which embrace the ring and an annular groove in the cap at 31, 32 so as to cause the ring to move axially with the cap. In each example a ball bearing 15 is inserted between the carrier and the body to allow a slight relative rotation therebetween when the friction of the cap on the jaws tends to rotate them during closing.
