Abstract

441,576. Electric signalling systems. SIEMENS & HALSKE AKT.-GES., Siemensstadt, Berlin. Nov. 24, 1934, No. 33863. Convention date, Nov. 24, 1933. [Class 40 (i)] In a system for indicating electrically the quantity of liquid in a tank, e.g. the petrol tank of an aircraft, the liquid forms the dielectric of a condenser which is so arranged that it includes either the entire quantity of liquid or a part of the liquid surrounding the "gravitational line " of the container. The gravitational line " is defined as the locus of the centres of gravity of elementary containers formed by planes parallel to the bottom of the container. As shown, a perforated and insulated plate 1b forms one plate of a condenser, the other plate of which is formed by the liquid container 1<a>. The plate 1<b> may be arranged horizontally instead of vertically. The condenser is connected in an A.C. bridge circuit formed by a second condenser 2 and resistances 3, 4 and the out-ofbalance current is passed through an amplifier 7 and rectifier 9 to operate a D.C. instrument 10. In order to ascertain the quantity of liquid in the tank the bridge is balanced by the condenser 2 which is calibrated to indicate quantity. The condenser 2 may be operated automatically under the control of the instrument 10 and may be adapted to control distant indicating apparatus which may be operated only when the quantity of liquid falls below a critical value. In a modification that part only of the liquid which surrounds the gravitional line of the container is enclosed between inner and outer condenser plates ; in addition a plurality of condensers connected in parallel may be disposed at different points in the liquid container. In the event that the container is of irregular shape, each condenser is shaped so that it conforms with the "gravitational line " of the space embraced. A calibrating condenser which is completely filled with liquid may be employed so that measurements of liquids of different dielectric constants may be effected. Several containers may be supervised individually and the sum of all the containers also may be measured.
