Abstract

440,537. Making bags &c. WINKLER, A., 30, Seminarstrasse, and DUNNEBIER, M., 46, Engerser Landstrasse, both in Neuwied, Germany. April 3, 1935, No. 10362. [Class 94 (ii)] Apparatus for making bags &c. variable as to shape &c., in which the work-piece receives its first fold simultaneously with its withdrawal from the stack, is characterised in that the workpiece, withdrawn by the rolls 5, 6 and provided with a first fold, is directed into a folder pocket 35, 351, 37 from which it is extracted by a separate pair of rolls 30, 31, roll 30 being in contact with roll 5, extraction being attended by the formation of a second fold in the work-piece, the recess 30, 31 directing the fold into a roll track 42-53 at the end of which the work-piece is received by grippers 83 on an endless conveyer 84 and carried through folding and sticking zones 101-111 for the closure and bottom flaps to the stacking table 112. The roll 5 may be a combined friction and suction roll, furnished with a suction zone 27 and a rubber rail 8 which is periodically raised by cam action to contact with and bulge the lowermost blank of the stack, or it may have the rail 8 replaced by a second suction zone. Two relatively adjustable cams, concentric with the shaft of the roll 5, enable adjustment of the actuation of the rubber rail 8 for it to act once per revolution or once in two revolutions of the roll 5, as desired. Rolls 5, 30 direct the folded blank into an adjustable pocket 35, 37, from which the rolls 30, 31, the latter being a suction roll, extract it with the formation of a second fold, and feed it to rolls 42, 43, where rails 54, coacting with a groove 55, form abutments to position the folded blanks accurately for further operation thereon. Conveyer rolls 44, 45 now feed the blank to rolls 46, 47 where blades 57, 58 effect creasings transversely and longitudinally of the blank, the blade 58 being used only when folders of the double-pocket type for photographs &c. are required. In this case it pre-creases between the two pockets to be produced, but the blank is not folded therealong. Rolls 48, 49 now forward the blank to rolls 50, 51, where the longitudinal gumming is effected. For this purpose the upper flap of the folded blank is raised by a suction arm 65, while a cam-operated gummer bar 64, moving respectively faster and slower than the carrying roll 50, moves beneath the raised flap, presses gum on to the lower flap and is then withdrawn. The disengagement of the gummer bar 64 and the paper blank is aided by a plurality of camoperated metal flaps 75. Rolls 52, 53 now deliver the folded and partly gummed blank to spring grippers 83 carried by the chain 84 the upper jaw of each gripper being operated by a cam-operated tooth 96 carried by the sprockets 85, 87, oscillating flaps 113 ensuring the reception of the blanks into the grippers The blanks are then conveyed past folders 101 which turn the bottom and closure flaps over on to the bag &c. rolls 102, 103 pressing the same. The flaps are then opened by guides 104, gummed at 105 refolded at 109, pressed at 110, 111 and delivered on to the table 112. The whole intake section of the machine is adjustable by rack and pinion 41, 40 to allow for longer or shorter blanks. The machine can be adjusted to act upon either one or two work-pieces per revolution, and is capable of dealing with paper bags, envelopes, simple open pockets or doublepocket folders.
