Abstract

440,286. Elastic - fluid turbines. ELLOR, J. E., Grandell, South Drive, Chain Lane, Mickleover, Derby. Sept. 24, 1934, No. 27369. [Class 110 (iii)] The effective area of the nozzles of a turbine driven by the exhaust from a reciprocating internal-combustion engine is increased after the high initial pressure stage has passed in order to allow the gases to be evacuated without back pressure during the subsequent stages of exhaust. The increase is effected by the withdrawal of obturators d<1> from the nozzles d3. The obturators are withdrawn against the pressure of springs d<4> by a cam actuated linkage f<1>, f<2>, f3. With a six cylinder engine four nozzles in 'each half of the turbine casing are connected to the manifold of three cylinders. Three of the four nozzles are provided with obturators which are worked in unison by the linkage.
