438,684. Friction clutches. HERBERT, Ltd., A., Canal Road, Edgwick, Coventry.- (Maschinenfabrik Weingarten Vorm. HCH. Schatz Akt.-Ges. ; Weingarten, W³rtemberg, Germany) Nov. 7, 1934, No. 31993. [Class 80 (ii)] [See also Group V] In presses the operating shaft is driven through the medium of a multi-plate clutch, the unclutching movement bringing into operation a multi-plate brake which stops the press. As shown, toggle levers 19, actuated by means of an inclined surface 21, transmit movement to a presser plate 17 of a multiple-plate clutch. The surface 21 is on an actuating rod which extends through the main operating shaft to the other side of the machine where it has a similar inclined surface for operating toggles and brake plates in a casing 24. The actuating rod is operated by a single control 25, the movement being timed so that the brake is applied just after the clutch is released. In a modification the clutch and brake are both mounted on the same side of the flywheel.
