Abstract

438,558. Fire-extinguishing bombs. FINZI, G., 45A, Via A. de Pretis, Rome. Dec. 21, 1934, No. 36638. [Classes 9 (i), 9 (ii), and 47 (ii)] An automatic extinguisher comprises a frangible container 1, for example, of cardboard, with a predetermined line of fracture, which is suspended from a ceiling or the like by a hook 21. The container is charged with an extinguishing medium and embodies an exposive charge 5 in a frangible tube 2. The latter extends outside the container and has a flange 3 supported on a fusible washer 15, which rests on the flange 14 of a heat-collecting member 13. The latter is fixed to a housing 11 in which is a coiled wire 10, the free end 9 of which is extended through the tube 2 and is operatively connected, as by a coil 8, to the detonator 7 of a fuze 6. In case of fire, the washer 15 melts and the extinguisher falls, uncoiling the wire 10. When the latter is fully extended, the coil 8 explodes the detonator 7, the fuze 6 is ignited, and the charge 5 is fired, scattering the extinguishing medium. Alternative methods of coiling the wire 10 in the housing 11 are described. In place of the fusible washer 15, a release operating by expansion may be employed. A percussion cap may be provided at some point on the container for exploding the charge 5 if the wire 10 should break or the detonator 7 fail to act.
