Abstract
437,343. Clutches; variable-speed gearing. BAILLEUL, L. P. A., Avenue des Baumettes, Nice, and CHIRON, J. J., Chemin du Landreau, Nantes, both in France. Jan. 20, 1934, No. 2090. Void [Abridged as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, July 26, 1934]. [Class 80 (ii)] In clutches the axially movable member comprises pins or rollers. An axially movable member 3, Fig. 1, feathered on the shaft 1 carries cylindrical pins 6 which at ther ends are received in semi - cylindrical recesses in the member 3, and engage complementary recesses 11 in the members 2, 2<1> co-axial with the shaft, and either of which can be coupled to the shaft by suitable displacement of the member 3. The long pins 6 may be replaced, Fig. 4, by two sets of short pins 13. The fixed pins may be replaced, Fig. 6, by rollers 17, rotating in recesses in the member 3, the rollers constituting an antifriction bearing when not in clutching engagement. In a modification, Fig. 10, the enlarged end 24 of the shaft 1 has part cylindrical recesses 20; the member 21 loosely surrounding the shaft and prevented from axial movement thereon, is provided interiorly with partcylindrical recesses 22 ; the coupling rollers 26 are carried in apertures in a sleeve 23 which is feathered on the shaft. As applied to a freewheel, Figs. 12, 14, the hub 34 of the wheel is provided with the usual ratchet recesses ; the shifting member 31 feathered on the drive shaft 30 has recesses 32 to receive the rollers 33 which are separated and prevented from moving axially by a member 35. In the position shown in Fig. 12 the arrangement acts as a freewheel ; if the member 31 is moved to the right the wheel is coupled to the shaft for rotation in either direction. In a modification, Fig. 15, the shifting member 38 extends through a ball bearing 39 or housing and has reduced journals 41 carrying hollow rollers 40 which engage semi-cylindrical recesses 42 in the member 36 to be clutched to the shaft 37. As applied to a variable speed gear, Fig. 17, each of the gear wheels 44, 45, 46 is interiorly recessed to engage the rollers 47 which are spaced axially by sleeves 48 and run on the surface of the shaft 43 which is provided with a crown 49 having semi-cylindrical recesses to engage one set of rollers, so that by suitable movement of the shaft 43, any one of the gear wheels can be clutched to the shaft. In any of the constructions described, the ends of the rollers or pins may be rounded or bevelled to facilitate engagement. The coupling members may be conical to secure progressive connection with synchronization of speeds, or where the members are cylindrical, the races may be conical for the same purpose.
