[Class [Class 17 (i)] [See also Group VIII] Heel seats, shaping.-Heel seats on unattached soles, especially for slippers made on the turnshoe principle are made by cutting a channelshaped notch at each side of the sole at such a position that the forward edge of the notch is adapted to abut against the shoulder of the heel and then bevelling the remainder of the rear end of the sole. A suitable machine for cutting the notches comprises a knife 29 having a cutting edge of channel shape secured to a slide 13 reciprocated by a handle 17 provided with an arm 21 connected by a rod 23 with a treadle. A work table 35 is provided with heel end gauges 61, 63, gauges 65, 67, 69, 71 for engaging the side of the sole, and, on either side of the path of the knife, portions 55 of a fixed plate 45, which portions support the sole against the thrust of the knife. The heel end gauges are adjusted together by a right-and-lefthand screw turned by a head 103. To compensate for the difference in the inclination of the median line of the sole for right and left shoes, the adjusting screw is provided with a collar 101 closely fitting a slot in a slide 83 engaged by a pin 91 on a lever pivoted at 85 and provided with a handle 89. Stops 95 limit the movement of the handle, which is moved to the right or left for a right or left sole, respectively, and retained in position by a spring plunger. The side gauges are adjusted laterally of the work table so that the gauge 65 contacts with the inside of a left sole while the notch on the outside edge is being cut, the gauge 67 with the same side while the inside notch is being cut, the other two gauges being used for a right sole. The remainder of the heel seat margin may then be bevelled by an Apex skiver.
