Abstract
436,559. Oil engines. PERLMUTTER, B., 16, Rue des CÚlestines, Liege, Belgium. Sept. 28, 1934, No. 27848. Convention date, Sept. 28, 1933. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii)] In an oil engine having one or more offset combustion chambers h<1>, h<2> arranged in the cylinder head, each chamber is bounded by two flat walls h<3>, h<4> which diverge towards the periphery of the head and an outer wall h<5> having for the greater part of its length the shape of a volute, of which the radius of curvature decreases towards the cylinder axis, and for the remainder of its length a reverselycurved shape h<7> connecting the volute to the underside of the head. The two chambers h<1>, h<2> may be parallel or inclined to one another so that their lower ends intersect to form a common opening h<6> leading into the cylinder. A small quantity of fuel is injected into the chamber h<1> through an injector i early in the compression stroke, and near top dead-centre a large quantity of fuel is rapidly injected through an injector j into the chamber h<2>. Injection and combustion in the chamber h<1> are prolonged beyond the commencement of injection into the chamber h<2>. Arrangements of valves are described in which: (1) two exhaust valves are provided in the combustion chamber and two inlet valves in the cylinder head, (2) two valves S<1>, S<2> serving for both inlet and exhaust are provided in the combustion chamber and operated simultaneously or in alternate cycles, in which case an inlet valve S<3> is provided in the cylinder head, and (3) valves S<1> .. S', Fig. 9, serving for both inlet and exhaust, are provided and operated in pairs in alternate cycles.
