Abstract
435,760. Furnace grates. FILMA BURNERS, Ltd., and MARSDEN, A., 68, Victoria Street, Westminster. March 21, 1934, No. 8900. [Class 51 (i)] In a solid-fuel fired furnace in which the fuel is moved through the furnace by the rocking or tilting of alternate firebars, the bars are actuated by a motor comprising a cylinder having a piston which is actuated by fluid admitted to the cylinder under the control of valve mechanism electrically operated from a clock so that the sets of bars are rocked at definite time intervals. As shown, alternate bars 3 are adapted to be raised or tilted by means of arms projecting downwardly between a pair of push rods 6 connected to a crank 9 which is rocked by a two-armed lever 11 connected at its ends to the pistons operating in cylinders A and B. Similarly the bars 4 are actuated by another push rod coupled with the pistons in cylinders C and D. The inlet or outlet of pressure fluid to or from a cylinder is controlled by inlet and exhaust valves each normally held in either the open or closed position by a spring but adapted to be moved to the other position upon the energizing of an electromagnet. Normally all the bars are in the lowered position and are maintained in this position by pressure fluid from a circulating pump 38 which is admitted to the cylinders B and D by way of inlet valves B1 and D1, the corresponding exhaust valves B2 and D2 being closed. At the same time cylinders A and C are open to exhaust but closed to the supply, all the valves being held in the normal positions shown in Fig. 3, by springs. A controlling clock (not shown), rotates a shaft 40 carrying cams 41, 42 adapted to engage spring contact fingers 43, 44. The closing of the contacts 44 energizes the electromagnets 51, 49, 45, 46 associated with the valves A1, A2, B1, B2 respectively, which control the cylinders A and B so that the pressure fluid is admitted to the cylinder A and exhausted from the cylinder B. The bars 3 are then rocked to discharge the fuel thereon on to the adjacent bars 4. Similarly the closing of contacts 43 by the cam 41 serves to rock the bars 4. Preferably the shaft 40 rotates once every six minutes and the cams 41 and 42 are so located relatively that the bars 4 are actuated two minutes after the actuation of the bars 3.
