Abstract

Vat dyes, dyeing with.--Dyeing in an alkaline vat is effected with the incorporation in the vat of a compound of basic reaction and stable to alkali containing pentavalent phosphorus and at least one organic, preferably aliphatic, radicle with at least six carbon atoms directly attached to one another. Alternatively, the levelness of a vat dyeing may be improved by treating the vat dyed material with a blind alkaline vat containing such a compound. Such compound may be employed in the form of a salt. Compounds containing several hydrophilic groups, e.g. amino or hydroxy groups or glycol radicles, are especially suitable. Insoluble or insufficiently soluble compounds may be employed together with protective colloids or dispersing agents such as high molecular sulphonic acids or sulphuric esters, reaction products of alkylene oxides on organic compounds having reactive hydrogen atoms, condensation products of fatty acid chlorides with albumen degradation products, sulphite cellulose liquor and glue. Specified compounds or salts thereof are trimethyloctylphosphonium hydroxide and triethylcetyl- and triethyl-octadecyl-phosphonium bromides. Mixtures of the compounds with the dyestuffs and, if desired, the protective colloids or dispersing agents, may be prepared for addition to the vat. In an example, a mercerized bleached cotton satin is dyed in an alkaline hydrosulphite vat with Indanthrene brilliant green 4G double paste with addition per litre of the vat of 0,5 gram of strongly sulphonated castor oil and 0,05 gram of triethylcetylphosphonium bromide. Trimethyloctylphosphonium hydroxide is obtained by the action of alkali on the addition product from trimethylphosphine and octyl iodide. Triethylcetyl- and triethyloctodecyl - phosphonium bromides are obtained by combining triethylphosphine with cetyl and octodecyl bromides respectively.
