Abstract
435,359. Piston - rings. SIMPLEX PISTON RING CO. OF AMERICA, Inc., . 1966, East 66th Street, Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A. Jan. 24, 1935, No. 2358. Convention date, Jan. 29, 1934. [Class 122 (i)] A thin split piston-ring comprises a single helical convolution or is of bowed form whereby it will exert axial pressure when flattened and mounted in a groove with at least one other ring. When several such rings are mounted in a ring groove, one or more of them may be expanded by a spring L. Oil retaining grooves may be formed by bevelling the ring peripheries or reducing the diameter of some of them, Fig. 15. Where the rings are of small width the lowest ring m<1> is made wider to provide a good land surface, and this ring may contact the cylinder wall or not. Alternate rings P, P', Fig. 14, may make sealing contact with the cylinder wall and base of the ring groove. To prevent relative rotation of the rings an expanding spring L may engage recesses W therein and the ring ends may be bevelled to avoid risk of interlocking of the rings at the joints.
