435,183. Pile-driving. VIAZEMSKY, S. V. CONSTANTINOVITCH, PRINCE, 5, Carlton House Terrace, and MOWLEM & CO. Ltd., J., 91, Ebury Bridge Road, both in Westminster. Jan. 17, 1934, No. 1728. [Class 68 (ii)] A fluid-operated pile - driver comprises adjustable means for cutting off the supply o fluid and varying the height of the rise of the monkey As shown, the mon key 10 by which the pile 12 is driven is a gravitating hollow hollow cylinder moving over a piston 14, rod 16 and steam pipe 18 and the control device comprises telescopic rods 30 34 with an abut ment 48 and spring 50, the position of which may be varied by setting a pin 46 in one of a series of holes 44 in the rod 30. Steam is supplied by a pipe 20 and hose 22 to a piston valve casing 24, in which is an annular lift valve controlling the flow of steam to the piston 14 and the port 26, by means of which the cylinder 10 is lifted until the parts 48, 50 on the rod 30 abut on the tube 34 and move the catch 28. This releases the part 74 and a lever 70, so that the steam pressure in the casing 24 is then able to lift the valve in it and to cut off the steam supply, and to open the ports &c. 25, 26 18 to the atmosphere. The monkey then falls, and at the lowest part of its descent, the ropes 90 and spring 92 restore the parts to the position shown. In a modification, the catch 28 is arranged to prevent the rise of the part 74, the apparatus otherwise functioning in a manner similar to that described above.
