[Class 40 (v)] Sub-modulation systems of the kind described in Specifications 146,988, [Class 40 (v)], and 379,305 are characterized by the feature that the modulating current is applied both to the sub-modulation frequency and to the main carrier-frequency. As shown in Fig. 14, the carrier-wave generator 10 is choke-modulated by a sub-carrier generated by the valve 8, which is also choke-modulated by currents from a microphone 1 after amplification by a valve 6. Simultaneously the amplified microphone currents are applied from the secondary winding 40 of the transformer through a lead 381 direct to a tapping 36 in the grid circuit of the carrier-generator 10, giving rise to the wave-form shown in Fig. 8. The tapping point 45 on the grid of the subcarrier oscillator 8 may also be connected directly to the lead 38<1>, so that that valve is also grid-modulated by the amplified microphone currents, giving rise to the wave-form shown in Fig. 9. The percentage modulation may be adjusted in each case.
