Abstract

431,938. Automatic smallarms. CHEVALLIER SELF-LOADING FIREARMS, Ltd., 7, Union Court, Old Broad Street, London, CHEVALLIER, A. L., and SANDERS, T. F., 238, Berwick Avenue, Slough, Buckinghamshire. Jan. 12, 1934, No. 1233. [Classes 92 (ii) and 119] Relates to smallarms in which the breech bolt is locked by a transversely sliding locking member itself locked by a longitudinally movable inertia member, for example as in Specification 400,588. According to the invention, the locking member has at least one abutment facing rearwards to engage a corresponding abutment on the fixed part of the gun and an abutment facing forwards to engage a corresponding abutment on the bolt, and is so connected to the inertia member as to be moved transversely to unlock the breech when the inertia member moves forward relatively to the gun. The inertia member is in the form of a cover 8, shown in inverted plan in Fig. 9, with oblique slots 9 guided by studs 10 on the receiver 1 and with longitudinal grooves 16, 18 in engagement with lips 15, 17 respectively on lugs 13 on the locking member 12, and on the front end of said member, which is shown in plan in Fig. 12. The lugs 13 are guided by vertical notches 14 in the receiver ; and, in the locking position, the front face 19 of the locking member engages behind a shoulder 20 on the breech bolt 7, which is guided by wings 6 in longitudinal grooves 5 in the receiver. A transverse plate 22 is mounted in the grooves 16 behind the locking member 12 and is held in place by a latch 23 hinged to the cover 8. A spring 29 is interposed between the locking member and the plate 22 and serves to return the cover to the locking position. The forward stroke of the cover is limited by a stop 30, which can be released by a catch 32 and moved out of the way to permit the removal of the cover, after which the stop may itself also be removed. Three safety devices are provided one safety is a bent lever 34, which blocks the path of the firing-pin 40 until depressed by the cover 8 when this reaches the locking position. Another safety is a notched disc 44 which blocks the path of the sear 47 until an arm 42 on the disc is rocked and depressed by the cover 8, when this reaches the locking position. The third safety is an L-shaped spring arm 57, the end 59 of which locks the hammer 41 when the arm 57 is deflected by a cam 56 on a lever 54 when this is turned forward by hand. Another cam with a handle is provided on the other side of the cover to lift the cover up for hand loading. The receiver 1 is hinged at 3 to the trigger guard 2, and is fastened by a lock 4 at the rear end.
