Abstract

431,496. Coke ovens. DELKESKAMP, C., 1, Rosselstrasse, Wiesbaden, Germany. July 24, 1934, Nos. 21696 and 21697. Convention dates, Aug. 21, 1933 and Dec. 8, 1933. [Classes 51 (i), 51 (ii), and 55 (i)] In a retort bench for the distillation of fuel briquettes comprising a number of opentopped narrow retorts 34 arranged in a ring and provided with a common discharging device, each of the retorts is substantially quadrilateral in cross section and has two of its sides externally heated by flues 36. The briquettes are fed to the retorts from a common annular unheated shaft 42 together with inert powdered material to fill the voids between the briquettes. The longitudinal axes of the retorts lie helically on a cylindrical surface as exemplified for one retort by the dotted lines 35. Distillation gases are withdrawn from the retorts through side channels 38 connected at their upper ends to a gas collecting main 58. The retorts are heated by combustion gases from a burner 44 in each flue. The combustion gases are re-cycled together with fresh heating gases by collecting the gases from an upper chamber 48 of the retort bench by an exhauster 52 and returning them to a lower chamber 50 for admixture with the fresh heating gases. The briquettes are discharged on to a circular ring shaped plate 59 provided with openings corresponding to the individual retorts. A rotating scraper 64 sweeps the material through the openings into a gas-tight hopper 67 which leads to the outlet 70. In a modification, the retorts are formed by two coaxial metal cylinders 71, 72, Fig. 4, the space between being divided by radial division walls 73 connected alternately with the inner and outer cylinders to form the retorts 74. The bench is heated by a single burner 79 and the combustion gases are re-cycled as before. The discharging device comprises two ring-shaped rotating plates 91, 92, and a stationary stop plate 95 which scoops the material from the lower plate to the outlet 96. The breadth of the retorts is specified as from 100 to 200 mm.
