Abstract

431,354. Typewriters &c. BURROUGHS ADDING MACHINE CO., 6071, 2nd Boulevard, Detroit, Michigan. U.S.A. Jan. 5. 1934, No. 478. Convention date, April 8, 1933. [Class 100 (iv)] [See also Group XIX] Sheet-guiding arrangements; line-spacing mechanism.-A calculating or like machine is provided with gripping-means for automatically line-spacing a sheet which is inserted in a holder in front of the platen but is out of feeding contact therewith. The line-spacing movement of the sheet may be greater than the line-spacing imparted to a record-strip on the platen, and keycontrolled means for rendering effective the gripping-means may be provided. To facilitate repeat printing of a date, the key-latching means may be so arranged that the dating-keys are released only by the total-key. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a ticket or sheet 30, preferably doubled, is dropped into a stationary holder or shoot 31 disposed at the front of the platen 15 and consisting of a back 32, and front parts 33, 34 which are separated by a gap for the type-bars. The front parts have supporting-arms 35, 36 for attachment to pins 37 on a plate carrying spools 42, 47 and guides for an ink ribbon which is arranged in two plies 40, 41 along the printing line. A record-strip is fed over the platen and into a locked casing 25 by the usual line-spacing mechanism. The sheet is line-spaced by means of gripping-means consisting of pawls 100, 101 having shoulders 106, 107 and bosses 110 for engaging the bottom edge and the face of the sheet. The pawls are pivoted on the arms 102, 103 of a bail 104 which is operated by the means described below. When the bail is raised, the pawls are raised and are moved forwards by co-operation of inclines 108 with guide-slots 109. The shoulders 106, 107 are thereby caused to engage and line-space the sheet, and the bosses 110 grip the sheet to prevent overthrow of the sheet and to hold it in position during typing. On return of the pawls they are disengaged from the sheet by co-operation of inclines 111 with abutments 112. The line-spacing movement of the sheet is considerably greater than that of the record-strip. The bail 104 is connected by a spring 113 to a bail 114 operated by a bail 123 which is rocked at each operation of the machine. The arm 115 of the bail 114 is provided with a pivoted dog 119 and a finger 117 for co-operation with a rod on the bail 123, the dog being.normally out of the path of the bail 123. On depression of a key 130, the bail 114 is rocked slightly to move the dog 119 into the path of the bail 123, so that on operation of the machine the bail 123 is effective to rock the bails 114, 104, and the pawls 100, 101 line-space the sheet in the abovedescribed manner. On return, the bail 123 engages the finger 117 and the pawls are positively returned by co-operation of the arm 115 with a lug 150 on the arm 103. The key 130 rocks levers 134, 136, an incline 138 on the lever 136 co-operating with a pin 139 which is carried by a lever 140 and abuts on the arm 116 of a bail 114. Two lines are printed on the sheet 30 and the record-strip before the sheet is removed, the first line consisting of the date and the folio number, and the second line consisting of the amount. After the first line has been printed and the second line has been set, the key 130 is depressed to initiate line-spacing of the sheet and printing of the amount. To facilitate repeat-printing of a date, the key-latching means described in Specification 265,136, [Class 106 (i)], is so modified that the dating- keys are released by the total-key only. For this purpose the zero-stop members 71, Fig. 4, are cut away to avoid operation by the controlrod 69, and the total-key T rocks a bail 87 having fingers 88 arranged in front of the latching-plates 11 of the dating-keys 10. The totalkey rocks a bell-crank 80 carrying an arm 83 which engages a lug 86 on the bail. The zerostop members are connected by springs to the latching-plates. Specifications 263,097, 265,122, 265,140, [all in Class 100 (iv)], and 265,152, [Class 106 (i)], also are referred to.
