Abstract
Artificial marble is made by kneading a dry mixture comprising magnesia, marble powder, and calcium sulphate (as crude gypsum or crude alabaster) into a paste with a solution of magnesium chloride, adding to this paste magnesium oleate and magnesium stearate emulsified with tallow soap, and causing the resulting mixture to set to the desired shape with or without armouring. If armouring is used the mixture sets in permanent union therewith. Colouring matter may be added to the dry mixture. In an example 100 parts of magnesium oxide, 30 of finely ground marble dust and 20 of calcium sulphate are mixed dry, then kneaded with magnesium chloride solution, then 1 part of emulsion is added. This is spread on a vaseline- or oil-smeared mould of glass, crystal, metal, &c. Variegated colour may be obtained by the use of differently coloured pastes. The armouring may be of artificial slate or wood, natural slate or wood, sheet metal, or cement conglomerates.
