Abstract
In a process for the manufacture of artificial structures such as artificial threads or fibres from cellulose the structures in their initial form with or without prior rinsing are treated with a chemical agent which in a single operation performs the several actions, namely washing, and/or neutralizing, bleaching, and removal of any by-products and decomposition products which may be present, necessary for bringing the structures to the completed state except for a possible rinsing and drying. In the case of structures formed from viscose solutions, a hot dilute solution of sodium sulphite is a suitable agent. In an example artificial fibres from viscose after formation, and while in the spinning pots, or on bobbins, or as hanks are treated with a 2 per cent sodium sulphite solution at 60--65 DEG C. The solution desulphurizes the fibres, neutralizes acid from the precipitating bath, evolves sulphur dioxide which has a bleaching effect on the fibres and dissolves salts contained in the fibres. The process is applicable to lustrous or non-lustrous artificial silk.
