[Class 20 (ii)] Relates to ladders and gangways of the self-levelling step type and of the kind in which the steps c carry depending end brackets d pivoted at an upper point e to the adjacent string-board b and at a lower point f to a controlling bar g lying adjacent the inner face of the string-board. According to the invention, the pivoting points e, f of the steps are disposed vertically one above the other when the controlling platform a, to which the ladder is pivoted, is horizontal. Safe level steps are thus provided when the ladder is horizontal and when it inclines upwardly or downwardly from the platform a. In the construction shown, the string-boards are pivotally attached by rods h to lugs j on the platform, and the bars g, which are interconnected and spaced at their lower ends by cross members, are pivoted at k to lugs m depending from the platform. Sufficient space is provided between the string-boards and the ends of the steps to enable the bars g to pass between them.
