429,459. Electric welding. BUDD MANUFACTURING CO., E. G., 2500, Hunting Park Avenue, Philadelphia, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Tarbox, J. P.; 2500, Hunting Park Avenue, Philadelphia, U.S.A.) Aug. 28, 1934, No. 24734. Convention date, Aug. 28, 1933. [Class 83 (iv)] A spot welded joint in three or more thicknesses of sheet metal, such as of stainless steel, consists of a unit weld comprised of a number of spaced nuggets of fused weld metal, which do not extend throughout the thickness of the individual parts. The sheets are of heavy gauge, preferably from <1>/16" to <3>/16" thick, and the metal of each weld is melted preferably about one quarter of the thickness of each plate. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the weld 9 are in alignment. In another form, Fig. 4, the plates may be formed with projections 12, which are arranged in staggered relation in successive plates. In such case the electrodes 7, 8 may be of the extensive block type.
