Abstract

In the formation of granules of carbon black, droplets of a suspension of carbon black in a liquid are introduced into an atmosphere which partially dries the droplets while suspended therein. In operation, the carbon black is made into a suspension in water which may contain a protective agent or an agent serving to depress the surface tension, or both; e.g. 15 to 25 parts by weight of carbon black may be suspended by means of a colloid mill in 85 to 75 parts of water containing a little triethanolamine soap, &c. A stream of the suspension is caused to impinge on the surface of a rapidly rotating, horizontal disc mounted near the top of a tall cylindrical drying chamber through which an upward current of air passes, air inlets being provided at about the middle of the wall and arranged tangentially. The floor of the chamber may be heated, inclined and given a vibratory movement to cause the particles to accumulate round a delivery opening. A conveyer may carry the granules through a further drying apparatus after which they may be screened.
