Void [Abridged as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Feb. 14, 1934]. [Class 100 (iv)] Type-wheel machines for ciphering and coding ; index-setting arrangements; letter-spacing mechanism.-A typewriter for printing plain or ciphered messages comprises a type-drum bearing three lines of type and adjustable axially and circumferentially to print a selected character. The type, which may be formed by electrotype on a metal band, are inked by a pad 37 pivoted on an axis 38 in a frame 39 pivoted on a stem 40. The shaft 13, on which the type-drum 5 is adjustably secured for varying the cipher, is mounted in a bar pivoted in the frame of the machine to enable the drum to be swung against the carriage 28 for printing, and carries a gear-wheel 12 in mesh with a rack 11 carried by a lever 14 slidable in the frame, The lever 14 carries an adjustable extension 17 provided with an operating-knob 18 and with a support 25 for an indicator 27 adapted to be set to register with any division in two sets of characters on a scale 1 mounted in the machine, the extension 17 sliding longitudinally with respect to the lever 14 or carrying it laterally in this movement. The upper line of characters is normally in printing-position, the other lines being brought into position by levers 29, 30 which act against stops 31, 32. The shaft 13 is provided with three discs 36 corresponding to the lines of characters on the drum, these discs, when the shaft is swung for printing, being adapted to engage with a stop 41 connected to a tongue 43 in mesh with a rack 44 to effect letter-spacing ; word-spacing is under the control of a knob 45 also connected to the tongue 43. On depressing the lever 17, a projection 19 enters between the teeth of one of two racks 4, the positions of the teeth being staggered and corresponding to the positions of the divisions in the two sets on the scale 1.
