Abstract
428,492. Packeting-machines. JACKSON, D., and MOLINS MACHINE CO., Ltd., 2, Evelyn Street, Deptford, London. March 5, 1934, No. 6940. [Class 94 (i)] Packets of the type shown in Fig. 5, are closed by inserting the flap 4 into the slot 16 and pressing down the top panel 29 to force it into the closed positon. The packets 1, shown in plan in Fig. 1, are fed along a guide 2 by belts 3 as described in Specification 419,376, with the closure flaps projecting upwardly from the back panels. A reciprocating suction member 5 removes the leading packet to the left, springs 7 holding the remainder in position. A stop 8 maintains the leading packet against a guide 14 while a plunger 6 forces it to the closing position. The plunger is gapped to allow the suction member to operate before it is completely withdrawn. At the closing position, the packet is between guides 14, 15, and beneath folders 17, 18, shown in Fig. 3, in the act of descending about a pivot 19. The folder 18 turns over the flap 4, members 30 moving inwardly to assist in defining the top edge fold. When the flap has been laid against the front panel above the slot, the movement of the folder 18 is arrested by stops 27, 28, and the folder 17 continues to descend against the action of a spring 35, which normally holds the parts 17, 18 together. The members 30 are swung outwards by studs 34 and the folder 17 engages the top panel 29 and forces it downwards, thus causing the flap 4 to enter the slot 16. To assist this action, the lower portion of the front panel is caused to bulge into a recess 39 in the guide 15 by the action of the feed plunger 6, which moves forward slightly more than is necessary to align the packet for closing. When the folder 17 retires, the members 30 swing inwards and hold the panel 29 in position. The closed packets are fed away from the closing position by the succeeding packets and are removed into a stacker 37 by a plunger 36. The upper surface of the guide 15 is inclined at 38 to that if any packet passes the closing position without the tongue 4 being inserted into the slot, the tongue is engaged and moved upwardly so that the faulty packet can be seen and removed.
