Abstract

427,878. Compound engines. SCHIMANEK, E., M³egyetem, Budapest. July 24, 1933, No. 17997. Convention date, July 26, 1932. [Class 7 (ii)] In a compound Diesel engine the fuel-injection period is extended beyond one sixth of the piston stroke and the contents of the high pressure cylinder are transferred either directly or via a container to an expansion or working cylinder in which the combustion is completed. In the two - stroke cycle engine shown in Fig. 11, the working cylinder 2 is scavenged and charged by a compressor 5, the air entering through apertures 9<a> and expelling the exhaust gases through apertures 9. During the upstroke the air is forced past a valve 10 into a container 12 where it is stored until ports 14 in the high pressure cylinder 4 are uncovered at the end of the downstroke. During the downstroke the contents of the cylinder 4, which have been driven into the container 13 by the air in the container 12 at the end of the preceding downstroke, are admitted to the working cylinder past a valve 11. In a modified construction of a two-stroke cycle engine, the working and high pressure cylinders have stepped pistons, which pump air into containers for scavenging and charging the cylinders ; the contents of the high pressure cylinder enter the working cylinder via a container. In the construction shown in Fig. 17, both cylinders 31, 39 operate on a four-stroke cycle and air drawn in through the valve 33 is retained in a container 38 and subsequently admitted past a valve 41 into the high pressure cylinder 39. Following the fuel injection, the contents of the cylinder 39 are expelled past valves 42, 36 into the working cylinder 31 the flow either continuing to the end of the upstroke in the cylinder 39 or terminating in the last part of the upstroke ; the products are stored in a container 37. The cylinder 39 may also draw in air direct from the atmosphere and use the air from the container 38 to supplement the charge. In further modifications (1) the high pressure cylinder works on a twostroke cycle and the working cylinder on a four-stroke cycle. The crankshafts rotate at different speeds and the air compressed in the working cylinder serves to scavenge and charge the low pressure cylinder ; (2) the working cylinder 141, Fig. 25, operates on a two-stroke cycle and co-operates alternately with high pressure cylinders 140, 140<a>. The cylinder 141 is charged with air from a container 143a fed by a compressor 142, and the cylinders 140, 140<a> draw in air through the valves 144b to which a supplementary charge may be admitted through the pipe 147 from the working cylinder ; (3) the working cylinder 201, Fig. 30, works on a six-stroke cycle and the high pressure cylinder 202 on a two-stroke cycle. The six-stroke cycle comprises drawing air through a valve 203 and forcing it into a container 205 past a valve 204, inducing the contents of the container 208 and expelling them through the valve 120 and drawing in air and forcing it into the container 205. The two air suction strokes suffice to fill the cylinder 202 three times; (4) the working cylinder operates on a six-stroke cycle and the high pressure cylinder on a four-stroke cycle, the contents of the high pressure cylinder if desired being admitted into compressed air in the low pressure cylinder ; and (5) the working cylinder may operate on an eight-stroke cycle and the high pressure cylinder on a four-stroke cycle.
