Abstract

427,533. Variable-speed gearing. REO MOTOR CAR CO., 1331, South Washington Avenue, Lansing, Michigan, U.S.A. Aug. 18, 1933, No. 33412/34. Convention date, Oct. 17, 1932. Divided out of 427,470. [Class 80 (ii)] The description and drawings are identical with those of Specification 427,470, but the invention claimed is transmission mechanism comprising in combination a driving-member A, a driven member A<1>, an intermediate member A<2>, reversing-mechanism X between the members A, A<2>, a shifter S for operating the reversing-mechanism, planetary gearing B, C, D between the members A<2>, A<1> including a planetary gear carrier J, G, a oneway brake O for preventing the carrier from turning backwards during forward driving of the gearing X, an annular toothed flange K projecting from the carrier and a dog R operated by the movement of the shifter S into reverse driving position of the gearing X for engaging the flange K to hold the carrier J, G against rotation in the direction permitted by the one-way brake O. The carrier J, G is always an abutment member while the planetary gearing is operative with a solid-driving plate clutch M disengaged. While the one-way brake 0 prevents the carrier from running backwards during forward driving in the gearing X, it would be useless during reversed driving in the gearing X. To this end, the dog R is provided, which becomes operative as the gearing X is shifted into reverse to prevent the carrier from turning in the direction which has become the rearward one with respect to the changed drive in the planetary gearing. The dog R prevents the carrier from turning in the opposite direction to that prevented by the one-way brake O. The dog R slides radially in a fixed guide Q<2> and has a shank R<1> which is pivoted at S<1> to the shifter S of the reversing train. The gearing X may be the two-speed and reversing gearing operated by segment and rack selector mechanism V<1> described in Specification 427,471.
