Abstract

426,756. Projectile fuzes. SOC. ITALIANA E. BREDA PER COSTRUZIONI MECCANICHE, 9, Via Bordoni, Milan, Italy. July 16, 1934, No. 20797. Convention date, July 14, 1933. Addition to 357,696. [Class 9 (i)] Relates to fuzes in which two semispherical masses 6, 7 of explosive, disintegratable, or other material, bear against two discs 1, 2 carrying a firing- pin 3 and a percussion cap 4, and which are kept apart by a spring 5 and a safety bolt 8, which is pivoted at 10 to a cowl 9, all as described in the parent Specification. According to the invention, the fuze is locked in the safe position by an inertia mass 11 having a projection 13, Fig. 1, or 16, Fig. 6, in engagement with a pin 12 locking the cowl, or with an eye 17 on the cowl, the mass 11 being held in place by lugs 21 on the disc 2. This enables the bomb to be discharged from a firearm, the discharge causing the set back of the mass 11 and thereby the release of the cowl, which during flight swings round the pivot 10 and pulls the safety bolt 8 out. The pin 12 may be removed by hand for hand throwing. The cowl may have a hinged part 18, which swings out about its hinge 19 under centrifugal force to help the arming operation when the bomb is fired from a rifled firearm.
