Abstract
Vat dyes, dyeing with; printing.--In the dyeing or printing by acid oxidation on the fibre of ester salts of leuco vat dyes (cf. Specifications 186,057 and 203,681, [both in Class 15 (ii)]), over-oxidation is avoided by conducting the oxidation in presence of stannous chloride or titanium trichloride. The process is particularly valuable for developing the sulphuric ester salts from leuco - N - dihydro - 1 : 2 : 2<1> : 1<1>-dianthraquinoneazine, e.g. the tetra-sulphuric ester salts obtainable by the process of Specification 383,741, or from 3 : 3<1>-dimethoxy-N-dihydro-1 : 2 : 2<1> : 1<1>-dianthraquinoneazine (cf. Specification 416,939). The following examples are specified. (1) Cotton is printed with an aqueous paste containing the sodium salt of the tetra-sulphuric ester of tetrahydro-1 : 2 : 2<1> : 1<1>-dianthraquinoneazine or an ester salt from the above 3 : 3<1>-dimethoxy derivative, diethyleneglycol-diethyl ether, urea, starch tragacanth thickening and sodium nitrite and the printed material is dried, developed for 2 seconds in a bath at 70 DEG C. containing sulphuric acid and stannous chloride or titanium trichloride, passed through the air for 30 seconds, washed and soaped at the boil; a printing of an ester salt not readily developed, e.g. one from 5 : 6 : 7-trichlorothionaphthene-5<1> : 7<1>-dichlorindole-indigo or 4 : 4<1>-dimethyl-6 : 6<1>-dichlorothioindigo may be developed at the same time. (2) Cotton is dyed by treatment for about \ba3/4\be hour in a bath at room temperature containing an ester salt of leuco-indigo, sodium sulphate, sodium nitrite and a wetting agent such as sodium - 1 - butylnaphthalene - 4 - sulphonate, wringing out, developing for \ba1/4\be hour in a bath at 20--70 DEG C. containing sulphuric acid and stannous chloride, again wringing out, rinsing, neutralizing and soaping.
