Abstract

A waste material from the manufacture of paper, viz. "lime sludge grouts" is mixed with a substance which generates gas, e.g. aluminium powder, whereby the composition becomes cellular when placed in position as a heat insulator. The composition may be made lighter by adding an infusorial earth, diatomite or its equivalent, and stronger by adding asbestos, preferably the variety known as "amasite." Sodium silicate, magnesium sulphate, and bleaching materials may also be added. A thin coat of the composition mixed with water may be applied and allowed to dry, and a second or third layer then added.
