Abstract

In the drying of sludge containing very fine particles, which may be in a state of colloidal subdivision, in centrifuging machines, filter presses, filter flasks, suction filters, drum and like rotary filters and worm presses with and without filtering devices, the sludge is subjected to a preliminary treatment, consisting in the addition of precipitating agents which cause the finest constituents to coagulate. Preferably the sludge is intimately mixed with the precipitating agent, if necessary with agitation, and then allowed to stand for a short while to settle. Suitable precipitating agents are milk of lime, starch, oil emulsion, resin emulsion, and sludges treated thereby are fine coal, coal sludge, ore sludge, metal sludges, petroleum sludge, stone and other sludges of the chemical industry.
