Abstract
A sizing-coat for a flexible abrasive article comprises nitrocellulose, vegetable drying oil, nitrocellulose solvent, ground silica, gum or resin, water, castor oil or tricresylphosphate and oleum spirits, examples of numerical quantities being specified.ALSO:A layer applied to the backing of a flexible abrasive article comprises chinawood oil, natural or synthetic resins or gums, lime, manganese dioxide, litharge, lead and cobalt acetates, the petroleum distillate known as oleum spirits, turpentine, and aluminium stearate. An alternative layer comprises oleum spirits with small additions of metal soaps such as aluminium stearate or palmitate, or calcium or magnesium oleate. Solutions of cellulose acetate may be used. Equal quantities of the two examples above may be mixed with pigments such as magnesium silicate or carbonate. A binder layer for the abrasive may comprise vegetable drying oil, manganese dioxide, litharge, resins and gums, lime, and oleum spirits. A similar composition with lead and cobalt acetates and turpentine serves as a sand-sizing layer. A back-sizing coat comprises vegetable drying oils, resins or gums, cobalt acetate, the substance known under the Registered Trade Mark "Gilsonite," soap chips, isinglass, alum, water, oleum spirits, and ethyl alcohol. Further backsizing coats comprise nitrocellulose, vegetable drying oil, nitrocellulose solvent, ground silica, gum or resin, water, castor oil or tricresylphosphate, and oleum spirits.
