Abstract
<PICT:0425221/IV/1> In the production of artificial silk by stretch - spinning in which the freshly spun silk is stretched by drawing round rollers of progressively increasing diameter, there is provided at least one stepped roller which is not driven except by the pull of the thread. Such an undriven roller may be immersed in the spinning bath. The stretched thread is preferably allowed to contract slightly, to avoid tight winding, by making the last roller forming part of one of said stepped rollers, of smaller diameter than the largest roller. Thread from the spinning nozzle A passes round rollers B. C. C<1> during which it is stretched, and round the roller F, which allows it to contract slightly; rollers B and C<1> are integral and freely mounted, and rollers C and F are also integral and freely mounted; the thread is drawn off by the winding device E. The double stepped pulleys may be replaced by pulleys having three or more steps.
