Aug. 29, 1933, No. 23973. [Class 38 (ii)] A coil for a current transformer is wholly or partially surrounded by two overlapping conducting shields insulated from one another and connected to different points on the coil to constitute a condenser connected in parallel with all or part of the coil. A former-wound coil for a current transformer having windings 1 separated by inter-turn insulation 2 is partially surrounded by a conducting shield 3, which may consist of a layer of graphite-treated fabric tape, and is connected to one end of the coil at 9. Suitable packing material is arranged between the shield 3 and the coil 1 to increase the radius of the bends in the shield. A further layer of insulation 5 is applied outside the shield 3 and has a second conducting shield 6 arranged thereon overlapping the shield 3 and connected to the other end of the coil at 10. The main insulation to earth is applied on the outside of the construction thus formed. The conducting shields 3 and 6 act as a condenser shunted across the coil and byepass high frequency transients coming from the line. Also, under normal conditions, these shields are at substantially the same potential as the coil so that any possibility of corona inside the shields is eliminated. According to the Provisional Specification, the conducting shields may be made of metal foil or of insulating tape having a conducting film on one side. Specification 355,675 is referred to.
