Abstract

424,892. Theatrical and musical amusement apparatus. SHEPHERD, W. V., The Weir Hotel, Rayleigh, Essex. Aug. 29, 1933, No. 23909. [Classes 132 (i) and 132 (iii)] [See also Group XXXIX] Dance band equipment includes gramophone and lighting devices and a voice modifying instrument comprising an imitation wind instrument, mouthpiece, microphone, amplifier and loud - speaker. The voice modifying instrument shown in Fig. 1 comprises a reed or other mouth piece a, a tube b, and microphone c, an amplifier e, and a loud-speaker f in the bell of a tubular brass instrument d simulating for example a double-bass. The microphone c may be mounted on or incorporated with the instrument d or together with the amplifier e may be disposed in any convenient relation to the instrument. The loud-speaker f need not be disposed in the bell of the instrument d but can be located in any position in which the sound waves will appear to be proceeding from the instrument and will not effect the microphone. The instrument will preferably be suspended or supported in such position that the mouthpiece a is level with the performer's mouth, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the instrument need not be held. Fig. 2 shows devices for use in a dance hall including an instrument d as described above, platform g, lights h, in a pivotally mounted casing h<1> and a gramophone or radio-gramophone with turntable, pick-up and amplifier connected to cone type loud-speaker j mounted behind baffle-board j<1>. A second loud-speaker k<1> with baffle board k can be placed in series or parallel conjunction with the loud-speakers j and k<1> or with the loud-speaker f in the instrument d. The amplifier or amplifiers of the gramophone can be connected to the loud-speaker f in the instrument d as well as to the loud-speakers j and k<1> and those replacing the lamps x<2> and y<2>. The whole of the devices are controlled by a single performer from a switchboard to give the effect of a full dance orchestra.
