Abstract

424,873. Rolling. SCHLOEMANN AKT.-GES., 13, Steinstrasse, D³sseldorf, Germany. Sept. 11, 1934, No. 26101. Convention date, Sept. 12, 1933. [Class 83 (iv)] Tilting jaws 22 grip and raise a billet on its edge 21, Fig. 5, after which it can be traversed bodily sideways. The jaws are closed on the billet by a crank 5, Fig. 3, operating toggles 3 and 4. The jaws 22 comprise one side of a jointed parallelogram the other sides being 9 and part of the lever 8, right of the point 10 and part of the link 11 ; the other parts of 8 (left) and 11 (downwards) forming a smaller parallelogram with 13 and 18 the point 15 being fixed on the carriage. The height of the tongs can be varied by motor 25 actuating crank shaft 23 and link to point 17 whereby the parallelogram 13 &c., pivots about the fixed point 15 so that the parallelogram 9, 8, &c., is also raised or lowered and hence the jaws 22 are raised or lowered. The link 13 is resilient to avoid breakage. The tongs are inclined, e.g. at a or a<1>. Fig. 2, by the motor 20 operating a worm gear 19 which rotates the lever 11 about the fixed point 15 so that the angle of the parallelogram 9, 8, &c., varies so tilting the jaws 22. The motor 29 operating through gearing 30 and shaft 36 operates the crank 5, Fig. 3 to open or close the jaws on the work. The carriage 16 is traversed on rails 26 by motor 27 to move the work transversely. Fig. 2 shows the jaw movement from the position a or the position a<1>, to central position c. The jaws may be in the form of rollers, Fig. 4. In a modified mechanism a roller and guide on one limb of a parallelogram, Fig. 7, (not shown), keeps the tongs head at the same height during swinging.
