Abstract
424,751. Setting projectile fuzes. MEFINA SOC. ANON., Binningen, and VARAUD, A., 109, Route de Lyon, Geneva, both in Switzerland. June 13, 1934, No. 17509. [Class 9 (i)] Relates to apparatus for setting projectile fuzes of the kind described in Specifications 407,843 and 407,845. According to the present invention, a rotary driving member 15 is arranged concentrically with two other members 19, 1, one 19 for locking and coupling the projectile, and the other 1 for effecting the timing. A projectile introduced into the apparatus depresses a rod 28 connected by racks 29, 30 and pinion 31 to a spring controlled plunger 25, which is thus withdrawn and unlocks the driving disc 15 and the crown 19 thereon. The disc 15 is then rotated clockwise by means of its shaft 14; and, by means of pawls 22 on the disc in engagement with the teeth of the crown 19, the crown is made to follow the rotation and to operate the projectile locking eccentric 7 and the coupling device 3 by means of a link 12 pivoted to a lug 20 on the crown. When this double operation is completed, rods 18 attached to the timing crown 1 and traversing holes 16 in the disc 15 deflect the pawls 22 and abut against the edge of the holes. The locking crown 19 then remains in its position, while the timing crown 1 is driven round by the disc 15 until arrested by the adjustable stop determining the time required. The setting completed, the shaft 14 is rotated in the reverse direction, and the first part of this rotation is transmitted by another set of pawls 21 on the disc 15 to the crown 19 to unlock and uncouple the projectile, until the transverse rods 18 deflect these pawls and abut against the other edge of the holes 16. Continued rotation of the shaft 14 and disc 15 then drives the timing ring 1 back to zero, whereupon the plunger 25 relocks the apparatus when the projectile is removed. Slots may be formed at a pivot of the linkwork 12 to ease the co-operation of the pawls with the teeth of the crown 19. In a modification, instead of the pawls 21, 22 and the teeth on the crown 19, the crown is frictionally clamped to the disc 15 under the control of cam-like clamping devices. Both pawls and clamping devices may be provided, the latter being put in action if the pawl go out of order. The lever 11 to which the link 12 is connected may be constructed tumbler-fashion to cause the mechanism to pass to its extreme positions through a dead centre. A tumbler catch may be provided on a member rotating with the driving shaft and co-operating with a fixed part of the apparatus to compel the operator to complete the timing operation before he can turn the shaft in the reverse direction, the catch being automatically rocked in one direction or the other as the timing crown reaches the set time and the zero positions respectively.
