[Class 138 (ii)] The valve for discharging " free steam " from the head of an ironing-press which is integrally attached to the free end of a swinging beam, is actuated by mechanism carried by the beam and operated either by movement of the beam itself or by the operation of the means which cause such movement. In the form shown in Fig. 1 the valve k is opened, through a rod g and arm f, by the clockwise rotation of a bell-crank lever c about its pivot j which is carried by the beam a. Rotation of the bellcrank is effected by the engagement of a roller on one arm of the bell-crank with a stationary cam d. The pivot j is eccentrically mounted so that the valve-operating mechanism can be rendered inoperative. In the form shown in Fig. 2 the stem w of the steaming valve is operated by the engagement of a cam m on a plunger rod n with a roller t mechanically connected to the valve stem. The plunger rod is moved against the force of a spring r by fluid pressure admitted to the cylinder p through a pipe y communicating, through a reducing valve, from the press operating cylinder or from the supply thereto. The spring r controls the duration of the steaming, the valve being open for a longer period during press closing than during the opening movement. The steaming valve may also be operated by arranging for the movement of the head lever to complete electric circuits containing valveoperating solenoids.
