Abstract
424,153. Degumming fibres. STRAW FIBRES, Ltd., 128, Bishopsgate, London, TIRAFERRI, L. R., 17, Via Mazzini, Bologna, Italy. May 15, 1933, No. 4612. [Class 120 (i)] To produce and degum decorticated fibre and/or tow from the leaves or leaves and stalks of fibre-yielding vegetable plants such as flax, hemp, jute, ramie or rhea, sisal, cactus leaf, palm leaf or aloe, the non-retted and weathered plants are subjected in a dry condition to a succession of mechanical decorticating actions to remove the woody matter, the decorticated fibres then being boiled in an aqueous solution of saponified casein to degum the fibres. The plants are successively broken, shaken, scutched and teased, the decorticated fibres then being boiled in an aqueous solution of soda, resin and casein in an open vat or in an autoclave under pressure, the latter treatment being at 123-150‹ C. and from 2-3 atmospheres pressure and occupying about half an hour. The treatment effects a partial decolourization of the fibres or tow. Specifications 408,007 and 424,189 are referred to.
