Abstract

423,894. Frictional pocket igniters. KUTTER, L., 4, Johann Hoffmannplatz, Vienna. Dec. 21, 1933, Nos. 36039 and 36040. Convention dates, Dec. 21, 1932 and Jan. 21, 1933. [Class 75 (iii)] In a lighter in which the wick tube 5 is pivoted to the fuel container 1 so that it can be swung out of the igniting position for lighting pipes, &c., the internal dimensions of the hollow pivot, formed by interfitting caps 6, 7, are much greater than the diameter of the wick to allow the latter to be led through without tension, twisting, or sharp bends. As shown, the cap 7, carrying the wick tube 5, is rotatable on the cap 6, connected to a perforated or slotted wick tube 4, and is milled &c., at the outer side for engagement by the thumb. The cap 6 is secured by a screw 13 to one wall 8, the cap 7 bearing on the opposite wall. In a modification, the cap 7 only partly overlaps the cap 6 and is held by a spring against a shoulder in the wall of the latter. The hollow pivot may be filled with absorbent material, which may consist wholly or partly of reserve wick. The wicktube 5 carries a sealing plate 19 for a wick-cap 15 and a wind guard 21 may be secured in position by a screw-plug 20 in the end of the tube. The wick-cap 5 is carried by a cover 16 adapted, on initial operation to move the pivot 26 of a link 25 past the dead-centre position, to be swung by a spring 23 into the open or closed position. The friction-wheel 29 is simultaneously operated during an opening movement by means of a spring pawl 30 on the cover co-operating with projections 29<1> on the wheel. The wick-tube 5 may be held normally in the igniting position by a compression spring connected by a link to the cap 7, the link being provided with an operating member projecting through the casing, or by a spiral spring acting on the cap 7 which is connected by a link to a twoarmed operating lever projecting through the casing preferably immediately below the end 27 of the cover, or the wick-tube may be adapted to be swung out of the casing by means of a tension spring when released from a pivoted catch controlled by a press button.
