Abstract
423,419. Glass manufacture. DICHTER, J., 8, Hauptstrasse, Sch÷neberg, Berlin. June 28, 1934, No. 19165. Convention date, June 30, 1933. Addition to 364,211. [Class 56] The machine described in the parent Specification, for making ampoules from glass tubing, is provided with a tool which is held against the softened glass, after the drawing of the stem, to shape the neck of the ampoule positively. The tool may consist of a roller 106 pivoted on a lever 107 which is mounted on an arm 111 supported by a carrier 105. The carrier 105 has a downward extension 103 which runs on a cam rail 118, and it is kept parallel with the glass tube by means of a pair of links 104 pivoted to the bracket 11 that supports the lower chuck 10. A nozzle 131 may be used as a gas burner or as an air jet to heat or cool the glass tube as required. The cam rail 118 is directly connected to a cam rail 71a which regulates the descent of the chuck when the heated glass tube is being drawn out to form the stem 140. The cam rail 118 swings the roller 106 into contact with the glass tube to shape the neck 159, Fig. 4, of the finished ampoule. Preferably, the roller 106 is provided with a ridge 121 to form a waist 158 on the neck of the ampoule. In a modified construction, the roller 106 does not move vertically in unison with the chuck 10, but the lever 107 is pivoted on a spider which rotates with the glass tube about the central column of the machine. The lever is moved horizontally by a cam secured to the central column.
