Abstract
422,582. Vulcanizing-presses. BRIDGE & CO., Ltd., D., Castleton Iron Works, Castleton, Lancashire.-(National Rubber Machinery Co. ; Akron, Ohio, U.S.A.) Sept. 11, 1933, No. 25052. [Class 70] A watch-case vulcanizer has exterior locking means power operated in timed relation to the opening and closing of the vulcanizer, means for stripping the tyre from the mould, and means for completing the closing of the mould by moving one of the mould members. An upper platen 25, Fig. 2, is hinged at 23 to a lower platen 21. On an extension of the hinge arm 24 is trunnioned a cylinder 59. In the open position shown, the cylinder is locked by a latch 66 engaging a projection 68 on the piston rod 58. The depressing of a pedal 72 pushes back a rod 71, the forked end of which engages a spring-held pin 70 on the latch 66, and releases the cylinder 59 which is now free to move out on its piston, and close the vulcanizer when pressure is admitted to its after end. The piston rod 58 is then urged outwardly and turns a shaft 41 which carries plates 44 with lugs 45 and adjustable contacts 46 which extend into the path of locking arms 30 eccentrically mounted on the ends of the shaft 41. The upper ends of the arms 30 have T-shaped heads 34 which engage slots 31 in outstanding lugs 32 on the upper platen. The adjustment is such that the head engages its slot before the downward pull due to the eccentric mounting of the arm is effective. The tyre 75 is mounted on a bead-clamping ring 77, 78, Fig. 3, and is attached by a bayonet slot 80 to the head of a lifting pin 81. The lower end of the pin 81 has a cross-head 87 which bears on the end of a bell-crank lever 88, Fig. 2. The other arm 91 of this lever has a swivel through which passes a push rod 93 pivoted on the head of the cylinder 59. A collar 94 on the rod 93 is so adjusted as to bear on the lever 91 and raise the pin 81 as the opening of the vulcanizer nears completion. After locking, the mould halves are forced together by pressure fluid admitted to an annular bag 97, Fig. 3, in a recess 96 in the lower platen 21. A metal plate 99 is placed on the bag 97, and on this is placed an insulator plate 100 on the underside of which are formed ribs 101 to make a sinuous path for cooling gas passed through the insulator. A ring 110 limits the expansion of the bag 97. Upward movement of the lower mould is limited by upstanding rods 119, Fig. 2, on lugs 118 on the lower platen 21 with pins 123 overlying lugs 120 on the mould. Screws 121 in the lugs 120 allow of limited angular adjustment of the mould on the platen.
