[Classes 16 and 146 (i)] In a visible card index in which the cards are stepped in a transverse direction, the cards each have a wide rectangular visible edge provided at the top with an inclined or horizontal line of inscription, and a heavy vertical line is provided on one side of the visible edge so that when the cards are assembled the vertical lines effect a separation of the inscriptions in the visible edges of the index, and serve to indicate the omission of a card. Each card 7, Fig. 5, has at one or both edges a visible edge 10 which carries inclined subject-matter inscriptions 11, preferably starting from a horizontal line 24, and a heavy vertical line 12 is provided adjacent the inner edge and is normally visible. In addition, a further heavy vertical line 27 may be provided near to the visible edge 10, but this line is normally covered by an overlapping card, and only becomes visible when the overlapping card has been removed. In a modification, each card has a visible edge 2<1>, Fig. 12, which receives a horizontal inscription, and a heavy vertical line 3 is provided on the outer edge at the top. A horizontal line 7 joins the line 3 to a vertical line 17. The line 17 may extend up to a continuous inscription line 6, where a mark may be provided. The mark is normally covered by an overlapping card, but becomes visible when the latter is removed. The cards are mounted in a tray or drawer on the bottom of which notched &c. spacers 2 are arranged. The cards may have notches on their lower edges to position them on the spacers 2, or the lower edges may be straight and provided with clips having tongues to grip the cards, and lower notched tongues to rest on the spacers. Guide cards for separating the sets of cards in the tray &c. are provided with metal edge bindings adapted to carry tabs or indicators, and with supporting feet at each end. The front and rear walls of the tray &c. have adjustable inclinable members to enable the cards to be rested in an inclined position. As shown in Fig. 12, the visible edge of each card may be subdivided into monthly divisions, and horizontal or vertical slots 9 are provided to receive the two ends 12<1> of a celluloid signal 11<1> which may have a pointer 15.
