Abstract

420,824. Colour photography. BAKER, T. T., The Hut, Hatch End, Middlesex, and DUFAYCOLOR, Ltd., 19, New Bridge Street, London. June 6, 1933, No. 16300. [Class 98 (ii)] A multicolour screen for use in colour photography and kinematography is prepared by applying one colour to the surface of a film or base, printing a pattern of inky resist thereon from a printing surface, e.g. a roller, having mercurial ink-repelling areas, bleaching the colour from the parts unprotected by the resist, dyeing the bleached parts a second colour and removing the resists. The process may be repeated for producing a three-colour screen. In carrying out the process, a cellulose acetate film, prepared for example as described in Specifications 243,032, [Class 70], 281,803, 287,635,.or 301,439, [all in Class 2 (ii)], is coated with a layer of collodion, e.g. in a machine of the type described in Specification 321,222, [Class 140], dyed green with an alcoholic solution of malachite green and auramine. An irregular pattern in greasy ink is then printed thereon from a steel roller having inking areas 1 of chromium and inkrepelling areas 2 of mercury, and the dye is bleached from the unprotected parts with a mixture of alcohol, caustic potash, and acetone. The bleached parts are then dyed red with basic red N extra and the ink removed with benzene. A second ink resist falling indiscriminately on the red and green areas is then printed on the film, from which the colour is bleached in the unprotected parts as before, and the bleached parts dyed with an alcoholic solution of crystal violet and malachite green. The ink is removed with benzene and the film is dried, coated with a substratum e.g. of synthetic resin varnish and a layer of emulsion applied to it. The resist pattern may be irregular or regular and in the latter case the resist patterns are formed by sets of parallel lines and printed at right angles to one another. Specification 322,432, [Class 98 (ii)], also is referred to.
